Historical Curiosity - Original tiles from 1914
We got a present. A basket filled with white 15 x 15 tiles, decor lists and pieces with meander ornaments in white and blue. It turned out that the woman who came with the basket lived a few stairs from the store. When she had to renovate her small bathroom, she had saved the tiles that she liked so much. She wanted the afterworld to see how nice it was. The tiles were original and had been seated since the house was built. At the back of the tiles you can read the brand Villeroy & Boch. A company that started its production in Germany in 1748 and is still owned by descendants of the two start-up families.
What is a meander pattern?
The meander pattern can be described as a continuous loop with composite geometric shapes. The pattern has been used since ancient times and was named after the winding River Menderes in western Turkey. During the twentieth century, the decorative meander pattern became popular again. In other words, the architect who designed the house in Karlavägen, completed in 1914, must have been a few years ahead of his time!
