Facts & Info - Paint tin roof with linseed oil paint
Selder's linseed oil products and linseed oil paint are perfect for use on tin roof, gutters and drainage pipes in metal. Many other colors have a hard time getting hold of sheet metal, metal and especially galvanized materials, but with the right products and procedures you get a roof that lasts.
Treat with anti-rust oil
It is important to start with a layer of anticorrosive oil as the fatty oil binds and stops oxidation, both rust and galvanizing. The oil also provides extra protection even if it happens to get scratches in the color after snow removal, etc.
Start by removing old paint, dirt and loose rust that can be brushed away. Hard-sitting rust does not need to be removed.
Make sure the roof is completely dry.
Apply Selder anti-rust oil. You do not need to use any excess, but make sure the surface is wet. If necessary, move oil from saturated sites to places that still absorb oil. Continue until the entire surface is saturated. After an hour, remove any oil remaining on the surface as it would form a sticky film. Allow to oxidize.
PLASTIC-COVERED GALVANIZED PLATE ROOF: Modern sheet metal roofs have sometimes been treated with a "plastic film." In these cases, you first need to remove the plastic (but not the galvanizing). Then treat it as rusty metal above.
Paint with primer
Then it is time to paint with a coat of linseed oil primer from Selder & Co. One tip is to make the primer in a color as close to the final color as possible. As metal expands upon heating, small cracks can occur in the paint (depending on the quality of the metal and exposure to sunlight). If you have a great contrast between the primer and the final color, the primer can be visible through these cracks. Thus, if you want a black or dark red ceiling in the end, for example, it can be a shame to paint with a chalky white color.
Final treatment
Then paint with two coats of semi-gloss linseed oil paint in the selected color. Common colors are copper green, English red, gray or black, but you can of course choose any color!
Maintenance
Now your roof has been given proper protection that will last for 5-10 years. When you see that the paint starts to chalk on gutters and drainage pipes or if the rainwater has become slightly colored and creates discoloration on the inside of the pipes, it is time to apply a layer of maintenance oil. You can use the same anti-corrosive oil as before. After a thin layer of oil, the roof again becomes shiny and beautiful and lasts for another 5-6 years. With this maintenance, the roof treatment last basically forever!
Risk of self-ignition
Rags, etc. that are moistened by the linseed oil and linseed paint should be burned, dried in a non-flammable place or immersed in water before being discarded. On the other hand, painted or oil-treated surfaces do not automatically ignite; the risk only affects fibrous materials.
