Selder's Linseed Oil Paint
Selder's linseed oil paint delivers a durable and perfect finish that will last for many years when applied according to the following instructions:
- Start with a clean dry surface. - Do not apply the paint if the surface is damp, if there is a risk of rain, or if the daytime temperature is below 5 °C (41° F). Ensure good ventilation.
- Mix the paint thoroughly - Start by scraping up all the pigment from the bottom of the can. Stir until the color appears well blended. If you are using a stir stick instead of a rotating paint mixer, then close the lid and shake the can afterward. The colors should not be diluted with any additional solvent. The paint is anhydrous and will be damaged if diluted with water. Use the paint directly from the can!
- Primer and finish - First use the Linseed oil primer “Grund”. Once the primer has cured properly, apply two even and cohesive coats of semi-gloss or semi-matte linseed oil paint in the chosen color. Paint the layers carefully, applying coats that cover the surface, but are not too thick. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly (at least 24 hours) between coats. Work in the paint with light brush strokes until the paint layer is even and opaque, but not thick. When no more paint comes off the brush, repeat the process.
- Maintenance - if the color becomes dull and pale or chalky, you can apply a thin layer of Linseed Varnish (“Fernissa”) on the clean and dry color surface. The oil replaces the binder that the UV radiation has broken down and the surface will regain its original color and shine.
This linseed oil paint is made from refined linseed oils, which give it unique properties in terms of drying time, hardening, weather resistance, and mildew resistance. This linseed oil paint is characterized by low viscosity and high weight, which provides an easy-to-apply opaque color without the need for dilution. The density varies between 1.8-2.2 kg per liter (15.1-18.3 lb/US gal), which ensures a high proportion of pigments and long durability.
General information about linseed oil paint: Linseed oil paint is ideal for both indoor and outdoor use and can be applied to a variety of materials including wood, steel, plaster, and glass. When using linseed oil paint, it is important to apply thin coats. Use a high-quality brush with dense bristles. The paint provides a tough and durable surface that also promotes diffusion or “breathing”, which is important when working with old buildings. The linseed oil, which acts as a binder for the paint pigments, is photochromic, meaning it yellows slightly on surfaces that get too little sunlight. However, this photochromic process is reversible and the yellowed surface can regain its original color once it is exposed to sunlight.
Note: Linseed oil paint contains linseed oil. Rags and other fibrous material can ignite spontaneously. Soak the oily rags in water, place them in a plastic bag, and seal the bag tightly. Another option is to burn the rags.
